“O Lord, you have great power, shining-greatness and strength. Yes, everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you. You are the King, O Lord. And you are honored as head over all” (1 Chronicles 29:11).
I like to decide how my day will unfold. I make plans, write out a “to-do” list, arrange my time, and picture how much I will accomplish. Then an interruption comes. Someone needs my attention. A task takes longer than expected. An email changes the direction of the day. My carefully constructed day begins to unravel.
Often, my first response is frustration. The disruption may be inconvenient, but my reaction exposes something deeper: I wanted to be in charge.
We willingly call God our King when we sing or pray. Yet his kingship becomes more challenging when it touches our schedule, decisions, relationships, ambitions, and expectations. We want God’s blessing on our plans, but we are less comfortable allowing him to redirect them.
David’s prayer in 1 Chronicles lifts our eyes beyond our personal worlds. Everything in heaven and earth belongs to God. His authority is not limited to the areas we find easy to surrender. Our work, time, gifts, possessions, opportunities, and future are already his.
This does not mean we should stop making plans or become inactive. Wise preparation is good. But there is a difference between making plans with open hands and gripping them so tightly that every interruption feels like a threat.
Surrender is not giving up responsibility; it is giving up the illusion that we are sovereign.
God’s authority is not harsh or careless. The One who governs our lives is good, loving, wise, and attentive. We can trust him with what he changes as well as with what he allows to continue.
Perhaps surrender today will mean accepting an interruption with grace. It may mean obeying something God has already made clear. Or it may mean admitting that a particular schedule has become more important to you than following him faithfully.
Today, when interruption becomes frustration, simply pray: “You are the King, O Lord. And you are honored as head over all.”
For yourself: Which part of your schedule, plans, or future are you holding most tightly?
For another: Who needs wisdom to trust God’s leading in an uncertain situation?
Forgiveness: Where have you resisted God because his way interfered with your own?
Gratitude: When has a changed plan revealed God’s wisdom or care?

God my King, everything in heaven and on earth belongs to you, including my life and my “to-do” list. Forgive me for wanting your help while still insisting on being in control. I surrender my plans, expectations, and activities to you. Give me wisdom to know what is mine to do and humility to accept your redirection. Govern my thoughts so they are shaped by truth. Govern my words so they bring grace. Govern my actions so they reflect your character. When interruptions come, help me respond with openness rather than resentment. You are good, wise, and worthy of my trust. Amen.
