My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever (Psalm 73:26 NLT).
We do not like reaching the end of our physical, mental, or spiritual strength. Like me, I’m sure you prefer to be capable, organized, emotionally steady, and able to manage what is ahead. We want to be healthy. We want to be the person others can rely on. So, when we become weary or our carefully managed life begins to fall apart, weakness can feel like failure.
We wonder why we cannot cope better. We criticize ourselves for being anxious, overwhelmed, or unable to keep going at the same pace.
Yet Psalm 73 does not point us back toward greater self-reliance. It turns our attention to God: “God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.”
This is not a dismissal of the things we genuinely need—rest, practical help, wise advice, friendship, or healing. Instead, it is an admission that in every other support, we need the presence of God.
His presence does not always prevent our hearts from becoming heavy or our circumstances from being painful. It does something deeper. God meets us within our weakness and becomes the strength we cannot produce for ourselves. We can rest knowing the presence and power of God are made more perfect in our frailty.
The end of our strength is the beginning of God’s strength.
When you do not know which way to turn, you can turn toward God. When you do not have the energy to form an impressive prayer, you can simply say, “God, I need you.”
You do not need to hide your exhaustion from the One who already sees it.
Today, invite him into the places where you feel physically, mentally, or spiritually depleted.
For yourself: Where do you feel most depleted or inadequate today?
For another: Who needs to experience the nearness and strength of God?
Forgiveness: Where have you relied on your own ability instead of depending on God?
Gratitude: Where has God sustained you after your own strength had run out?
Bring those reflections to God.
Pray
Lord God, I confess that I want to appear strong even when I am struggling inside. I become frustrated with my limits and ashamed when I cannot manage everything well. Thank you that my weakness is where you want to reside. When I am failing, you come near and offer me your presence. Be my strength where my spirit is weary. Steady me where my emotions feel fragile. Remind me that I do not have to hold myself and everyone else together. Fill the cracked and ordinary places of my life with your extraordinary grace. You are faithful, and you are all I need. Amen.
