Foundation

We added an addition to our house a couple of years ago. What began as a simple idea took a lot of work—architectural drawings, town approvals, and endless decisions. The initial shock, though, was seeing the driveway ripped up, and a huge hole dug—but, for a good reason. Truckload after truckload of concrete was poured, setting the foundations in place. I trusted our builder. He was making a home that was solid.

Our addition is a great example for the parable Jesus told of the wise and foolish builders.

Jesus said: “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock” (Matthew 7:24).

These words are not just “homeowner improvements” to our standard of living; they are foundational words to build a life on. But, there’s another important aspect to Jesus’ words that we can learn from the building of our addition. Our builder wouldn’t lay the foundation in a blizzard; he made the most of fair, spring-like conditions. It is the same for us. We should not wait for storms or crises to build our foundation with God. Strength and resilience is created before the rain arrives. When life is going well, that is when we should dig deep into God’s Word and anchoring ourselves to God’s character and care through worship and prayer.

An Unstoppable Life isn’t built in the storm; it’s built for the storm.

Dig deep today so you can stand firm tomorrow.

A Prayer to Build a Strong Foundation

Heavenly Father, life can get so busy. I want to commit to finding time to read your scriptures, learn from your words, and spend time talking to you. Give me the wisdom and the resolve to make these actions a priority, so that when storms hit and crises come, I have a solid foundation of trust in you and strength that you have given me to withstand trouble. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
