keep your eyes open for God

“Honor his holy name with Hallelujahs, you who seek God. Live a happy life! Keep your eyes open for God, watch for his works; be alert for signs of his presence” (Psalm 105:3–4 MSG).

Sometimes we expect God’s presence to be obvious.

We look for something dramatic—an unmistakable answer to prayer, a sudden change in circumstances, or a moment when we feel overwhelmed by his nearness.

And sometimes God does meet us in ways that take our breath away.

But much of life is ordinary.

We get up. Make breakfast. Answer emails. Drive children where they need to go. Work. Fold laundry. Make dinner. Go to bed. And in the middle of all that normality, we can move through an entire day without noticing God.

Psalm 105 gives us an invitation: “Keep your eyes open for God.”

That requires attentiveness.

I have been learning that awe often begins by noticing details. The brilliance of the sky. The veins in a leaf. The voice of a person we love. The exact words from Scripture that meet us in a particular need. A kindness we did not expect.

None of these things means we should look for secret messages in every coincidence or try to turn ordinary events into supernatural signs.

Instead, we learn to live awake to God.

God’s presence is not made true by our noticing it. Noticing simply helps us live more fully in what is already true.

He is Creator of the world around us. He is present with us through his Spirit. He speaks through Scripture. He works through people. And he is attentive to details we are tempted to think are too small for his concern.

Perhaps God feels distant today. You do not have to manufacture an emotional experience.

Simply ask him to open your eyes.

Then move through your ordinary day expectantly. Notice beauty. Pay attention to kindness. Listen carefully when you read his Word. Stop long enough to recognize the good gift directly in front of you.

Keep your eyes open for God.

For yourself: Where do you most need to become aware of God’s presence today?

For another: Who needs reassurance that God is near even though he or she cannot see what he is doing?

Forgiveness: Where has distraction or busyness made you inattentive to God?

Gratitude: What have you noticed recently that reminded you of God’s presence or goodness?

Bring those reflections to God.

Pray

Heavenly Father, open my eyes today. Forgive me for rushing through life so quickly that I hardly notice you. I look for the dramatic and overlook your presence in the ordinary. Help me pay attention to your creation, your words, the people around me, and the quiet evidence of your care. When you feel distant, keep me from assuming you are absent. Make me alert to your presence without demanding signs or trying to force an experience. Give me a wide-eyed appreciation of your goodness and let the ordinary details of my day turn my thoughts toward you. Amen.
