I am pleased to introduce Sabra Gilbert as part of the #BeBoldGirl series.  I love her fresh story of boldly stepping up when she felt unprepared.  Welcome, Sabra! #BeBoldGirl

Hello Everyone! I’m Sabra from Becoming Sabra Gilbert  and I would love to share some of my story with you here today! I still very much consider myself a young Christian. I came to Christ between my junior and senior year of high school. Throughout my senior year, I leaned heavily on those around me for encouragement and knowledge in Christ.

But transitioning from high school to college brought a new challenge. I was suddenly expected to take a lot of my faith into my own hands and mature considerably. It was a chance to fall or thrive, and I was excited when I found a college ministry that spoke to me and helped me to continue to grow. But in my growth, they expected me to do something that I hadn’t realized I would be expected to do so soon in my Christian life.

They expected me to take on disciples of my own and lead the younger college girls.

To be honest, when my Bible study leader, Sarah, brought the topic up to me my sophomore year, I laughed. I wasn’t anywhere near as qualified as her to even think of taking on a Bible study of my own and leading a group of freshman girls.

I didn’t know enough.

I wasn’t disciplined enough.

I hadn’t even read through my entire Bible yet!

How could I help mature young Christian girls in Christ when I didn’t feel anywhere near mature enough to take this position?

I put the thought out of my mind and went on with college life, until a week or so later when yet another leader in my college ministry approached me and asked if I had considered being a Bible study leader. I laughed and asked if Sarah had put her up to it. But it surprised me when she said no. She hadn’t talked to Sarah about it at all. She asked me to pray about it, but there would be a fun course coming up to prepare new study leaders.

I was terrified at the thought of taking on that much responsibility.

If it was 100% up to me, of course I wouldn’t have done it. I’m not qualified.

Alone, I have no idea how to lead fellow Christians in their path with Christ.

Alone, my sins pile on top of me and I can’t do anything about that.

But we’re not alone when we have Christ and the Holy Spirit within us.

Christ calls for us to be bold in Him and do the things that we can’t do alone. We don’t have to fear the things that we don’t think we are qualified to do, because we have someone who is more than qualified to stand beside us and lead us along the way.

I tell you, if friendship is not enough to make him get up to give you the bread, your boldness will make him get up and give you whatever you need. So I tell you, ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you. Luke 11:8-9 (NCV)

  • Remember Moses thought he was inadequate and not up to the job when God asked him to go to Egypt. Many great people in the Bible thought they were not ready or able.

    God bless.

  • Thanks so much for sharing your story! It is such a good reminder of relying on the Holy Spirit to guide and equip us for the tasks that He has prepared for us. On our own, it is definitely much more difficult to say yes. It’s so encouraging to see how God used you!

  • Thank you, Crystal! I’m glad that I was a bible study leader. I loved it so much! And I still talk with a bunch of the girls that I had in my studies. Now I’m graduating and starting a journey to self employment! I hope that I can find a way to keep ministry in my work through photography and blog design.

    Thank you again!

    XOXO,
    Sabra G.

  • Thank you for sharing at Sitting Among Friends. Great story that Sarah has shared here today. So encouraging for new Christians and even some older Christians that think they have to themselves be equipped for disciplining. If Christ calls us He will equip us we just have to be available.

  • Love your story Sabra! We each have our own unique story and it’s so good to hear that of others. I often find too that when God calls me to something I don’t feel prepared but then He assures me that with Him I am. Enjoy the journey 🙂

  • God is so faithful! He always equips us for the calling He has placed on our lives. It’s in the moments that we feel the least qualified that He shows up in a big way and uses our weakness for His glory. Great reminder to be bold today!

  • I’m still a fairly new Christian and find myself forgetting far too often that the Holy Spirit lives in me :). Wonderful inspiration here of how and why to be bold, Sabra. Thank you for sharing your story. Fear can stop us from fulfilling our destinies. Only God can push us through those scary places. Many blessings to you as you continue on this journey!

    • Thank you so much Candace!! Writing this post came at such a wonderful time as I needed to be reminded of trusting in the Holy Spirit again! I’m graduating college and jumping into the life of self employment!

I hope this story inspires you to take your own leap with the Holy Spirit!

      XOXO, Sabra G.
