The Invitation
It’s easy for our minds to feel cluttered and overwhelmed with what we have to do, a multitude of choice and the sheer abundance of information thrown at us daily. This week, we marvel at the infinite capacity of God’s intellect—the fact that his understanding manages the grand cosmos without ever losing track of a single human heart or hair.
He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit (Psalm 147:4–5).
A Prayer
Lord, I praise you for your limitless understanding. My own mind quickly feels overwhelmed by deadlines, anxieties, and the noise of the news cycle. But your wisdom is boundless. I stand in awe that the same mind that names and tracks the trillions of stars in distant galaxies is, at the same time, attentive to the quietest whisper of my heart and the number of hairs on my head.
Thank you that my ordinary life, which is often overwhelming, is not too insignificant for your wisdom and ways. Forgive me for seeing your world from the view of my world. Today, I marvel at your magnificence that is not too great to ever overlook a single detail of my days. Amen.
The Practice
This week, notice the cosmic awe. If it is clear tonight, step outside and look up at the stars (or find a photograph of deep space online). Spend sixty seconds reminding yourself: The God who holds all of the Universe together knows my name, knows my thoughts, and is holding me close.
The Blessing
May you carry a sense of breathtaking wonder into your week, knowing that the ruler of the universe is intimately mindful of you.
