I’m sure you’ve had one of those moments. You are speaking to someone and realize, “I was thinking the same thing!” We love discovering solidarity, that we’re not alone.
Even better is finding someone to come alongside us when we’re dealing with something hard. It helps when we have someone who not only thinks in the same way but is willing to help us. We are then given confidence and empowerment in our task.
My husband and I have been dealing with loud music from a neighboring construction site. He has also stepped in with reasons why it’s not acceptable. That has given me hope that we will get the music turned down, or turned off. I am so glad I am not the only voice.
People coming alongside us give us hope, optimism, confidence, and empowerment.
Moses experienced the same.
The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him (Exodus 4:27).
We’ve been on the journey so far with Moses. God speaking and explaining what he wanted Moses to do. Moses questioning. And now we are at the start of Moses carrying out God’s mission.
We see something important happening—things coming together.
Moses and Aaron met. They met at the mountain which would become an important symbol of God’s presence. I wonder what it was like for Aaron and Moses, brothers, to meet after all those years of being apart. The last time Aaron had seen Moses, he had fled into the desert after murdering an Egyptian. They had no texting, email or video calling to keep in touch then and arrange where to meet. Although the Bible doesn’t say so explicitly, it implies they were guided by God.
They met having both been spoken to by God. Moses told Aaron everything about the mission God had given him. Aaron, no holding back, agreed to be part of it.
I’m sure you’ve had one of those moments when you think this has to be more than coincidence. Perhaps you’ve talked to someone and realized God has not only spoken to you, but spoken to the other person about the same thing. That you both have a sense or urgency or passion for a mission. Maybe it gave you that feeling of hope or relief. You think “this is something we can work on together.” You realize you both have a common goal or common heartfelt desire.
Even as Moses questioned God about his suitability for the task. God had already put the wheels in motion for Aaron to join him.
Then the Lord became angry with Moses. “All right,” he said. “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he speaks well. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. He will be delighted to see you. Exodus 4:14
It’s a comforting thought that God not only knows how we are going to respond—as with Moses, “Lord, please! Send anyone else”” (Exodus 4:13)—but also that God put all the pieces together for his mission to be completed.
It’s the same for us. Do you have some hesitancy about the task ahead of you, whether you can do it alone? Then believe that God will bring someone alongside you. Chances are he has already put that in motion. Look out for that person. They should not be hard to spot. I’m sure Moses easily saw Aaron coming towards him in the desert!
When you are in conversation with other people, look for the things you have in common, the passions you share. Or if someone comes to mind and you can’t stop thinking about them, then reach out to them.
Wait to see who God wants to come alongside you. They will give you hope and confidence in what you need to do. Then step out together.
Pray
