Be Bold and Lead

I am pleased to introduce Sabra Gilbert as part of the #BeBoldGirl series.  I love her fresh story of boldly stepping up when she felt unprepared.  Welcome, Sabra! #BeBoldGirl

Hello Everyone! I’m Sabra from Becoming Sabra Gilbert  and I would love to share some of my story with you here today! I still very much consider myself a young Christian. I came to Christ between my junior and senior year of high school. Throughout my senior year, I leaned heavily on those around me for encouragement and knowledge in Christ.

But transitioning from high school to college brought a new challenge. I was suddenly expected to take a lot of my faith into my own hands and mature considerably. It was a chance to fall or thrive, and I was excited when I found a college ministry that spoke to me and helped me to continue to grow. But in my growth, they expected me to do something that I hadn’t realized I would be expected to do so soon in my Christian life.

They expected me to take on disciples of my own and lead the younger college girls.

To be honest, when my Bible study leader, Sarah, brought the topic up to me my sophomore year, I laughed. I wasn’t anywhere near as qualified as her to even think of taking on a Bible study of my own and leading a group of freshman girls.

I didn’t know enough.

I wasn’t disciplined enough.

I hadn’t even read through my entire Bible yet!

How could I help mature young Christian girls in Christ when I didn’t feel anywhere near mature enough to take this position?

I put the thought out of my mind and went on with college life, until a week or so later when yet another leader in my college ministry approached me and asked if I had considered being a Bible study leader. I laughed and asked if Sarah had put her up to it. But it surprised me when she said no. She hadn’t talked to Sarah about it at all. She asked me to pray about it, but there would be a fun course coming up to prepare new study leaders.

I was terrified at the thought of taking on that much responsibility.

If it was 100% up to me, of course I wouldn’t have done it. I’m not qualified.

Alone, I have no idea how to lead fellow Christians in their path with Christ.

Alone, my sins pile on top of me and I can’t do anything about that.

But we’re not alone when we have Christ and the Holy Spirit within us.

Christ calls for us to be bold in Him and do the things that we can’t do alone. We don’t have to fear the things that we don’t think we are qualified to do, because we have someone who is more than qualified to stand beside us and lead us along the way.

I tell you, if friendship is not enough to make him get up to give you the bread, your boldness will make him get up and give you whatever you need. So I tell you, ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you. Luke 11:8-9 (NCV)
