Rough gravel crunched under foot where mottled sandy colored rocks littered the ground. The sun, still strong, began its descent in the sky behind us while the blue waters of the Sea of Galilee stretched out in front of us.

The rocks made good seats to rest on after the short but steep walk, and from which to sit and listen. Mount Arbel is the kind of place where you would like to slip away and be alone—just you, your thoughts, and the Gospel of Mark.

Jesus went up on a mountainside alone to pray, Mark tells us. That mountain overlooked the Sea of Galilee. Where we stood today could have been the very spot where Jesus prayed. The thought is too much to comprehend.

Today, I am not alone. It is me and my over one hundred new best friends on the Proverbs 31 Holy Land Experience. But, that’s okay, because Jesus was rarely alone, particularly in Galilee—his home and base for his ministry.

But, that’s okay, because Jesus was rarely alone, particularly in Galilee—his home and base for his ministry. We could have been part of the crowd that so regularly followed Jesus. Like the gathering of 5,000 who wanted to hear what Jesus had to say, to be taught by him, and to ask for healing. This area could possibly be where Jesus fed the five thousand, Lysa TerKeurst told us. So, in the end, it doesn’t matter that I’m not alone, we can still have a mountaintop experience.

So, in the end, it doesn’t matter that I’m not alone.  At the sea or on the mountaintop, alone or with friends, Jesus wants us to experience him.

  • It makes me think of Brother Lawrence. “You can praise the Lord while peeling a spud!” How marvelous that we can experience Him in EVERY single aspect of our lives! Thanks for sharing! (Stopping over from #livefree.)
