Give God A Chance To Show He Is Good

“I wouldn’t mind tasting squirrel,” my eighteen-year old son announced. We were at dinner with our neighbors and discussing the foods, some of them unusual, eaten in countries globally and regionally.

Not only did I think “yuck, not me,” but I marveled how far my boy had come. He sat across the table from me tucking into spicy chorizo sausage and a bowl of beans as we shared a meal typical for the area of Colombia our friends came from.

Give God A Chance To Show He Is Good

This was the child I thought would never graduate beyond chicken nuggets.

It may seem unfair to have such little faith in your child and your own parenting skills, but no doubt you’ve experienced the same.

And, if you’re in the thick of it right now, take heart. Your child will not always be a picky eater.

Keep inviting your child to open his or her mouth to taste, and discover different foods are good.

We can apply this lesson to ourselves and trusting God, whatever our circumstances.

We need to continually open our eyes and see that trusting God is good, even if we’ve had faith in him for a long time. God has got your back—I wrote about David’s experience a while ago—even when things don’t go as planned.

I began to learn this truth daily some time ago.

We were in the throws of moving house. However, it was more complicated than transferring our belongings from one home to another. We were going to have a mobile lifestyle for the next few months.

The movers took our furniture into storage. It took me a while to decide what I needed as a nomad, and what I should discard.

It’s hard condensing your life into two suitcases.

We moved into our temporary accommodation—an Airbnb—only to find it uncomfortable and awkward. Things were not going as planned. I shed a few tears that night. Eventually we found somewhere else to stay. I could say we figured it out, but I believe God was watching out for us.

I muttered to my husband and myself over those few days: “we must be crazy and look ridiculous,” but I learned nothing is absurd with God.

Throughout the upheaval, I needed to get up each morning and remember to taste and see, and take refuge in God. God is good, and he’s still got my back.

Do you know God’s goodness in your own uncertainty?

  • I’ve found out that even when I’m faithless He remains faithful! He cannot deny Himself. God is indeed a good God in every situation.

  • It’s so important to remind ourselves of the truth, isn’t it? God is so good to grant us little reminders like the one you received from your son. Thank you for sharing with us at Grace & Truth!

  • Although I sometimes find it hard to see God’s goodness in the middle of a storm, I definitely recognize His provision afterward. I want to get to where I notice Him sooner when rough storms hit. Thank you for the reminder that He is good and cares about us in the midst of all circumstances!

  • God does indeed have you back. It is such a stretch to totally rely on Him for provisions and strength for each new day. It is in this way that we grow . I enjoyed the message you gave to our women at Cape Ann Bible Church and marveled than at your trust in Him for your, then, upcoming move. God does not only have His “children’s” backs but also walks beside us each moment of our lives. You are an inspiration to us all. I have learned that sometimes tears are part of the growing relationship. God Bless

    • Challis, thank you for your encouraging words of reassurance. I loved speaking at Cape Anne Bible Church. You have a wonderful community. Thankful for a God who walks beside us, carries us and wipes away our tears. His love is the best.

  • Oh yes, friend, I KNOW what it’s like to pack your life into 2 suitcases. 🙂 I’m glad God provided another place to stay? Your title really pulled me in because I’m walking through some very uncertain circumstances, and you’re reminding me to give God a chance to show His goodness. He will. He does every time.

  • God bless you as you take one step forward at a time leaning on His provision and grace as well as fresh mercies each morning. Thanks for sharing this journey with us as we anticipate what the Lord will do as a result of where He has led you to this point.

    • It’s always so much better to have others on the journey with us, isn’t it? Thanks for reminding me to anticipate the good things God has in store.

  • Rachel,
Continuing to lift you up in prayer as you trust God while putting one foot in front of the other. This is, perhaps, the most difficult type of trust. One of my favorite sayings is, “God’s got this!” He’s got you, your back, and His everlasting arms beneath you so you will not fall.
    Take courage…
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    • Beautiful. Thank you, Bev. Your comment reminded me of the words in Psalm 139: You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.

  • We seem to have struck a similar chord with Susie’s prompt, Rachel. I write more broadly about the uncertainty each day brings. I love the reminder, and often need it, about how God has my back. He has this, yes, even this! Blessings from your #livefreethursday neighbor.
