An invitation to chill out

Moving house is stressful. According to one research company the strain of relocating will last more than three months. I think they’re underestimating the results. Still, this explains my meltdowns this past week. I went to bed worrying about where exactly my family and I will be laying our heads after June 28. Oh, we have a rough plan to be in England for July, but so far we have not booked flights or a place to stay. My husband and I had a heated discussion. Uncertainty does that. Transition also brings fear of the unknown, and anxiety over losing what we’ve relied on—the challengeRead More →

Why We Should Pray for World Leaders

A photo in the New York Times the other day showed world leaders sitting around a table as if it were family dinnertime. President Obama sat chatting to David Cameron, the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, and Francois Hollande, the French President sat on either side of them. With the world’s political and economic powers munching caesar salad together, what did they talk about, I wonder? Surely, by being at one table they could bring about life-changing decisions to make our world a better place. If only it were that simple. The Bible urges us to pray for all those inRead More →

The Power of Messy Prayer

Why did she have to be so mean? I had only phoned to show my concern and to see if I could help. Clearly I had said the wrong thing. “What’s that got to do with you?” came the sharp retort. Her words whipped across my heart like a sharp knife. I know we were both stressed and finding it difficult to deal with a serious situation but did she really have to treat me like that? This wasn’t the first time her words had cut deeply. These new lacerations came on top of fresh scars. I tried to talk to my husband. He rolledRead More →

In the Front Row at the Feet of Jesus

Front row seats can be expensive. My husband and I discovered this when we bought tickets to a U2 concert. So we chose to sit a bit further back. But, still it was exciting. An ordinary-looking man stood in front of us. We noticed a lot of people stopped to say hello and shake his hand. Turns out, it was Bono’s brother. Often we think of the front row as where the action happens. But, being up front and close to Jesus can look completely different. One woman in particular, Mary, the sister of Martha, shows us what it looks like on the front rowRead More →

10 Prayers that Changed the World – Book Review

I looked at the bare patches on the ski runs—ground showing through where the snow had melted—a result of some mild weather. I thought about my daughter, due to arrive for her spring break, who wanted to ski. “Lord, please let it snow,” I prayed. The morning before she arrived, I woke to my phone buzzing. A notification came up with the overnight snowfall: nine inches. Only one or two had been forecast. The next day: nine inches. Then: seven inches. And: eleven inches. Was it divine intervention? Had God answered my prayer? Is there someone in heaven who governs what happens on Earth? ThisRead More →

When we can’t forgive

When we’ve been hurt by another person and it’s not fixed, what do we do? When they neither seem to notice what they have done wrong, nor care about the pain they have inflicted, let alone say they’re sorry, how do we live? Eva Mozes Kor along with her twin sister, Miriam, were taken to Auschwitz at age ten where Dr. Josef Mengele used them for medical experiments. Although Eva and Miriam were liberated from Auschwitz at the end of the war, Miriam died in 1993 from cancer attributed to the ordeals she had undergone. No one else in their family survived the war. Eva livesRead More →

Praying to God Our Promise-Keeper

Do you believe in the power of prayer? Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:16 (NIV) I invited my friend Wendy Blight to share with you today about Praying to God Our Promise-Keeper.   Knowing God by name. Calling upon God by name. Praying His Word … His Promises … back to Him are powerful and effective ways to usher God’s life-transforming work into our lives because our God is a Promise-Keeper. But prayer is hard. It doesn’t come naturally to mostRead More →

God Meets Us in the Lonely Place

We struggle to find the time to pray when our days are full from the moment we get up until we go to bed. Or when we do pray, our minds wander and we end up making our to do list instead of talking to God. Prayer is hard to do. I came across another reason for our difficulty with prayer, one I hadn’t considered before. In the devotional Magnificent Prayer it says prayer is a lonely business. I sat in Starbucks thinking about this point, surrounded by people and noise—the snorting of the coffee machine and voices competing to be heard. Two students chattedRead More →

We are over just over halfway through the Prayer Zone Workout Challenge and I am encouraged by reports of growth that I am hearing.  One of our participants, Angie, has shared on her blog how the PZW Challenge has impacted her and I thought you might like to hear from her.  Thank you, Angie for your enthusiastic support of PZW! So often, the pace of modern life doesn’t allow us to slow down enough to just feel God’s love surrounding us.  We tend to run from one event to another, without even thinking; it just becomes habit. I have been trying to make a conscious effort toRead More →

A Bold Approach to Healthy Resolutions

Today I am pleased to be guest posting for my friends Christa at Do A New Thing as part of her New Year, New Thing series.  The series looks at fresh approaches to old resolutions that are commonly broken.  I’m sharing a bold new way to look at your healthy resolutions.   The headline Get Your New Body Now jumps out at me from a magazine cover at the supermarket checkout as I’m piling bags of chips I can’t resist, and baklava I fancy having as a treat, onto the belt. “A new body—wouldn’t that be great,” I’m thinking. I’ve been that route before. I’veRead More →
